I just came back from visiting my family after 22 years. I had my military exempt card, but no one asked to look at it. That is a risk I personally wouldn't take if I were you. Upon arrival, once they found out that I haven't been there for so long, one gentelmen took me to a room and wrote down informations about me, my family, my work, my family in Iran, my wife, kids, parent, etc...
If you can go, I highly recommend it. If you have to take a risk, then I wouldn't. Better safe than sorry.
