December 18, 1998 --Iran Defeats Kuwait 2-0 and Wins Gold Medal

Everyone believed that Iran had the best team in Asia. Everyone believed that they had the strongest players and the most powerful team. Now it is official. The favorites of the Asian games win the gold medal after defeating Kuwait and they are now officially the best team in Asia.

In a strong performance against Kuwait today, the Iranians dominated the game, and gave their opponents few chances. Eventhough Azizi was not playing in the game and Abedzadeh was not in the goal for the Iranians their opponents could not win the game. Eventhough Iran was missing one of its strongest defensive players Khakpour due to insury, the Kuwaitis could not break the Iranian defense and score a goal. Even after Iran was forced to play with 10 players when Mahdavikia received the red card in the 78th minute of the game, the Kuwaitis could not seriously threaten the Iranian goal. It was all Iran in this game, the best team in Asia!!

The first goal of Iran was scored in the seventh minute of the game by the 21 year old rising star Ali Karimi. He sent the ball which was sent to him on a corner kick, into the Kuwaiti goal.

Although the Kuwaitis tried a number of times to approach the Iranian defensive zone, the solid play of the Iranian midfielders prevented them from getting too close to make any serious threats.

In the 27th minute of the game Karim Bagheri scored the second goal for Iran. Stealing the ball from the midfield he charged forward into the offensive zone and after dribbling the Kuwaiti goalkeeper scored the second goal from a very narrow angle.

The Iranians played a very aggressive and physical game as usual. In the 78th minute of the game Mahdavikia raised his leg high in the air to make a running interception and struck Kuwait's Ahmad Al-Mutairi, who was carried off and did not return due to a broken leg.

The Kuwaiti coach blamed part of their loss to the few fouls being called against Iran by the referees. Iran has a strong team, physically strong, and the referee helped them," he said, "We must have better referees at tournaments like this. I saw many hard fouls which went unpunished" He concluded, "In the whole of the match we made very few chances. But congratulations to Iran. We played as well as we could and I'm very proud the Kuwait team won the silver medal."

The Iranian team played a very strong game. Their defense was solid not giving too many opportunities to the Kuwaitis. They are experienced and they play well together. The Iranian coach was very pleased with the performance of his team. "We were more focused," said Iranian coach Mansour Pourheidari. "We had a plan and we didn't think about anything except the gold medal.

The Iranians reclaimed their gold medal for the second time this decade, the last time was in 1990 games in Bejin. Congratulations to the Iranian players for a superb performance.
