I think far too much fuss has been made over this film. I didn't see the film when it first came out, because people told me how bad it was. Years later, when my sister-in-law came from Iran she INSISTED we rent it only because it was banned in Iran. Making something illegal is probably the best way of generating interest in something that would otherwise pass unnoticed.
So, I watched it. Much to my surprise, it wasn't nearly as bad as it was made out to be. It didn't portray ALL Iranians a boorish people obsessed by religion - only the divorced woman's ex-in-laws I saw this as simply a divorced woman getting back in a big way at the family that she felt abused by. In one scene, it showed a family visitor, a mullah no less, acting surprised at how fanatic this family was. (He mentioned that it was strange that she wore a chador even inside the house. BTW - I know of a few Iranians who have made the mistake of marrying fanatic religious Americans that would make these people look like godless infidels). It showed Iran through HER eyes. Remember, this is a woman who was married to an Iranian for several years and never bothered to even learn the language. The movie showed that she had little or no exposure to Iranians, the culture, or the language prior to going to Iran with her husband.
It also showed kindness of Iranians. It was with help of Iranians that she was able to get out of the unfortunate situation that she had gotten herself into. Absolute strangers helped her. Not even one of them tried to take advantage of her obvious weakness. The scene where the people who were helping her leave held her jewelry for safe keeping and returned it once she was out of danger was especially touching.
No, the movie was not that realistic. There were quite a few details that were really silly. The Tehran airport scene, for example. Though someone may kill a sheep in the country for a new arrival, this would be more likely to happen at the Kennedy Airport in New York than in Tehran. And the screaming woman thing - well, as far as I know that is an Arab custom, not Iranian. But, when has Hollywood ever been realistic? I live in Arizona. I have yet to see a film staged in Arizona that doesn't completely distort Arizona. Every time I watch a film staged in Arizona, I cringe.
